For our customers that has been us for so many years, they get used to digital mixers we sold to them in the past. Now in March 2022, we have announced that we started to distribute Topp Pro digital mixers in Malaysia.
First of all, thank you to all of you for supporting AV Electronics Marketing by purchasing Topp Pro digital mixers. For new users of Topp Pro digital mixers, we would explain the scaling of the preamp Gain of the digital console. This information is valid for both Topp Pro DM24.8 and T2208.
Analog Gain make it hard to get an accurate adjustment as there is no printed info in the device itself beside; 0 dB at the far left knob turn and 50 dB at the far right knob turn. Basically, this let us know that there is 0 dB Gain if you turn the Gain all the way down to the left and we have a 50 dB Gain if we turn all the way right. If you put the knob somewhere in between, you have no idea the dB of gain on that particular position. The question that most have if the knob has a linear gain increase or a non-linear increase (logarithm increase)?
The answer is the Gain increase is a linear increase. This means, by turning the knob to 12 o clock position, it means + 25 dB Gain increase.
Following are series of pictures showing various positions and it's dB.
+ 10 dB Gain (approx 8 o clock position)
+ 20 dB gain (approx 11 o clock)
+ 30 dB Gain (approx 2 o clock)
+ 40 dB (approx 4 o clock)
+ 50 dB Gain
Generally, in proper miking technique, proper handling of microphone and using a generic microphone need about + 30 dB to + 40dB of Gain. Extreme case such as wrong distance in miking and wrong mic handling and soft voices may need up to + 50dB Gain. In ultra-extreme case where more Gain needed, a compressor and Make-up Gain is needed. However, the best solution of these extremes will be educating the users to properly handle the microphones and setting up correct miking distance.
